SimpleViewer requires JavaScript and the Flash Player. Get Flash. Watery textures accompany a sense of cyclical rhythm within my new paintings. The linear line is revisited, yet transcends its simple directional constraints and is further developed into a fluid intermingling of layers and movement. Laboriously developed markings meld with quick, erratic strokes. Brittle plaster is placed in its nakedness amid heavily developed layers of fluidity. Hints of gauzy fabric graze the levels allowing for a soft tactile quality to shift in and out of the visible. As I paint, my inner atmosphere is projected onto the substrate. I paint the entire piece, washing layer over layer, adding and subtracting different features. Within the 'contained' pieces, I cover up a portion of the painting with white plaster. Within the 'exposed' pieces, pristine white pillars extend from beyond the panel, allowing for the entire piece to remain exposed to the viewer. These concepts of meditated exposition and burial form the dialog within. - Solo exhibition: 'tidal', 2011 |
