Cielo: a new series

A new series has been emerging — patient, steady, sure-footed and yet, unrelenting. This is how it happens: how a new body of work takes shape. Obsession becomes a forceful member in the creation process —pushing its broad shoulders into the foreground, leaving little room for anything else.

Blues — soft and luscious and clouded with traces of gauzy light have been dominating my palette. Dense textures taking on a near-pillowy depth — revealing and concealing aquamarine layers beneath. Opaque, gossamer-like washes cloak this deep cerulean, bringing a greater and more expansive depth to each work. Light reactive glazes cling delicately to peaks and troughs on the toothsome surface. Inspired by the gauzy enormity of diurnal skies, these paintings mimic the cloud-graced abyss overhead, devoid of surrounding form and horizon. Light becomes the main focus — both within the composition and without.

The sky serves as a constant point of inspiration for my work. The shifting light causes a full spectrum of colors to wash over landscape and towering cloudscapes, alike. As we look up, we cannot help but feel child-like. For many, gazing upwards reminds us of childhood days spent imagining forms within the vaporous cathedrals floating overhead. Gazing upwards conjures up a feeling that we aren’t big after all… that we are but a speck in an infinite and expanding space. Gazing upwards makes us question who we are, what we represent and how we show up in our small and delicate world.
